I live in Ostrava. Sad to say, the bad crazy seems to be making its way over here. This is the talk of the town over here, to put it mildly.

Thanks. Most people are hoping the guy was just an isolated nutburger. And for once, folks here are quite happy with the performance of the police, who took the threat seriously and acted on it, possibly preventing a catastrophe. There's a few neo-Nazi types and white supremacists around, and I've been called "damned foreigner" before, even though I've been living in the country for 11 years now, and speak the language pretty well.

I wouldn't be half-surprised to find out this fellow's targets were either Romani (Gypsies) or the Vietnamese community. Or who knows? Maybe he'd just start blowing anyone away just for the sheer hell of it.

"The things we learn on LGF".

Interesting place to live. My family comes from over the border (Wizna). What is the attraction for the Vietnamese in Ostrava besides any port in a storm? I spent a few years in VN back in the 60s.

Ostrava is an interesting place to live; it's certainly less expensive than Prague.

There's not too many Vietnamese here, a relative handful. The majority of the Vietnamese community lives in the Central Bohemia region (Středočeský kraj) and the western parts of the country. The Vietnamese here are small shopkeepers predominantly, along with owning a few bars and casinos. Business opportunities, most likely, with not so much competition.

I'm planning on heading off to Vietnam next, ironically enough! The Mekong Delta region, a coastal city called Rach Gia in Kien Giang province. Most likely by the end of the year. For me, business opportunity is the reason; not too many native English speakers out there, so as a TEFL teacher, it's a good place to go, and from my contacts there (former students) unbelievably cheap to live. Which I like.
