Maybe I'm an outlier, but an Arabic name on an American black man just makes me think he was born in the 60s or 70s. I grew up surrounded by Kamals and Jamals and Rashids and Aishas and Imanis, all of whom were Baptists or Catholics. It was a trend.

I know Obama's "Hussein" is from a different source, but that's what it triggers in my head.

All true, but that is here.

What is most interesting to me is how Israelis, both Jews and = Arabs perceive him, with and without his middle name.

I know a lot of Israelis. I have more than 20 relatives living in Israel. They ALL without exception would have, in 2008, voted for Obama if they could have.

Today, I estimate less than half would.

That tells me that they are influenced only by his actions and words.

Or more likely they have been faked out by right wing bullshit. His words and actions speak to a closer relationship than they had with GWB, who threatened loan guarantees and some defense shipment.

Obama makes no such threats and has approved weaponry for Israel that is literally state of the art and previously kept for US forces only.

Did your friends buy into that border statement bullcrap?

For you it was bull crap, for me it wasn't [Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]

But there are a lot of other words and actions.

Obama is making a change to where the US stands in the region. No I am not saying he is standing with the Palestinians, that is silly. However, he is trying to move the US policy to the middle, to be more of a “neutral player” in Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.

If you want to be in the middle, or think of yourself as neutral that is fine. In fact it plays well to the American sense of fairness. It sounds good to say “we are not taking sides and only want to help both sides.

However America long ago decided that it was not going to be neutral. To many of the Jews it is as simple as “you are either with us or against us” We have seen the effect of neutral in the past, and we didn’t like it.

The main reason for Israel is that forever more there will be at least one government what will never “be neutral”.

I could be wrong but I'm quite certain it was GHWB who threatened to withhold loan guarantees and arms shipments not GWB.

Pretty sure it was Bush the elder too. In fact, it caused him some grief during the '92 campaign when Clinton attempted to bash Bush for not supporting Israel enough.

Why do you think your (probably fabricated) anecdotal data should mean anything?

And have you asked them what words and actions have swayed them-- especially since Obama's support for Israel has been identical, if not stronger, than G.W. Bush's?
