WOW. A company can cut its price by 25% and still make a profit. Does that mean we've been gouged by GM all along? /

Seems the DoD might be the single largest buyer that pushed the numbers up vs. "Americans". Geo. H.W. Bush just bought one as well.

Electric cars face a fundamental problem that is far from solved. It takes too long too recharge or "fill up". Once you deplete that battery, you are stuck for hours. Once that battery goes the way of the battery in our laptop or cell phone its with a new car or a new battery set, very expensive. Disposal of the old battery set is still problematic.

Only some buyers can deal with these limitations.

The Volt is technically a hybrid car, because it has a gas-powered engine which starts-up when the batteries are too low for the electric engine. Thats what makes it an "extended-range" electric car. And running the combustion engine also restores some power to the batteries.

The starting price is the big problem with most hybrid vehicles. They're not fuel-efficient enough to recoup that extra initial investment.

A slightly greener option affordable to the masses does much more good than some "carbon-free" rich guy's toy. We have to develop cleaner technology around whats affordable. Otherwise, "going green" is just another yuppie dick-measuring contest.

Volt is unique in the commercially available hybrid vehicles. It is a Plug In Hybrid. So you plug it in at home, drive to work and plug it in there. If you live within 30 miles of work, you might never use the gasoline engine.

Where I live they have plugs in almost every parking lot. They have been used in the past to plug in a heater for the engine while you park in winter. (Block Heater). These plugs can be used to trickle charge your car while you park.

That is the only thing missing for me. The plug in part of Hybrid. My next car will be a plug in hybrid.
