I watched the Colbert Report last night and the interview with Jim Garlow. What I found fascinating was that he made the claim that the government should stay the hell out of religion (aka taxing churches), religion should have the right to meddle in politics (aka telling the parishioners who to vote for or they will go to hell).

Why the double standard?

Why the double standard?

Power and Greed.

Remember, they don't get taxed on what they take in and they feel superior because they are doing "God's Work."

Has to be a hell of a high.

Such religious organizations that dip their toes so deeply in politics need the shit taxed out of them. Pay-to-play, so to speak.

Promoting political candidates and ballot initiatives can cause an organization to lose 501(c)(3) status.

And that is what Jim Garlow's group is about, trying to force a court showdown with the IRS to get that removed. They feel that this restriction does not allow Freedom of speech for ministers.

Which I agree with, representatives of religious organizations SHOULD be free to speak their minds on behalf of those they represent. However, that MUST go hand in hand with removing the tax deductible status of those organizations. They should be able to speak freely but the government shouldn't be writing checks (in the form of tax deductions) to people just because people donated money to them.

[Its also worth noting that they can have this now if they drop their non-profit status but for some reason none of them want to do that....]

Corporation are people, my friends. So are churches. People pay taxes. Pay your taxes!

It should be noted that many of the organizations listed in this article also happen to be on the Southern Poverty Legal Center's "Hate Group" listings.

Compare and contrast:
