Why do I think Kid Rock supported Mitt Romney? So he would not lose Country Music sales…
Just my opinion but I am trying to figure out why Kid Rock, whose lifestyle (other than being rich) is the 180 of the world Mitt Romney is advocating for would support him (again beyond the rich guys stick together angle).
I have contacts in the music marketing business and we were discussing this topic of Kid Rock’s support for Mitt because we found it so weird and thus funny.
But my pal rattled off some statistics and told us that Kid Rock has re-invented himself as a Country Music honkey tonker and CD sales in Country Music are the only genre (outside of kids music) where CD sales are still substantial over downloading.
Best we can figure, children CDs sell because they are given as gifts or bought by grandparents thus they bypass Itunes. And Country Music? Well seems that section of the country into Country lags in broadband connections and thus CD sales still go strong there.
Thus, Kid Rock being for Obama, may have caused a backlash against him by his new Country Music fan club. Kid Rock also has a fascination for Hank Williams, Jr. (calling himself his un-official son) and that may have rubbed off on him as well.
The Dixie Chicks backlash is something most Americans have forgotten but it really did scare the Country Music industry when it happened and I know for a fact that unofficial memos went out afterwards telling artists of this genre to tow the “patriotic line” of the Bush era lest they suffer the same backlash.
The Dixie Chicks had to re-invent their music sound for their last album (produced by Rick Rubin) and that was because they felt Country alone was no longer a safe harbor for them (the album was a hit but black listed from becoming soundtracks to TV shows or commercials which is how marketing is done for music these days).
