As Americans our concern is about Netanyahu’s neocon war mongering over Iran. Israel is not a state or entity of the US where we need concern ourselves about their military draft problems.

A small amount of disagreement on this statement:

The Haredim are not an enemy that has to be crushed, they are a community that has to be integrated into society.

Yes, they should be integrated into society, however that means that the rule of law applies to them as equally as it does to all other residents. The habit of the Israeli government simply “looking the other way” when acts of property destruction and violence are committed by Haredi should not be tolerated.

I don’t support the extension of the draft to the ultra-Orthodox.

I support the abolition of the draft all together, and I support all draft dodgers and refusniks. In my mind, to be considered a liberal country, you cannot, by threat of imprisonment, force someone to kill or be killed against there will. It’s time to call the draft what it is: a blood tax.

Of course, compulsory military service for yeshiva students is never going to happen. The official patronage that allows vast numbers of young men to do nothing but study Torah serves a critically important purpose in maintaining a state that privileges Jewish people over non-Jewish peoples.

I find Haaretz to be alot OT in their writing . NO ONE is looking to ” crush the haredi ” . The whole issue is extremely complicated for ANY side or party in this issue .
Keep in mind there is already in operation aharedi battalion, the Netzah Yehuda battalion . And they have proved a suucessfull entity , however they are not conscripts . They will never draft Torah Prodigies , that much is settled , but Yeshiva dropouts are being considered , and they can then be integrated into society in useful jobs after discharge . But hanging above it all is the issues of Sects and Women . This would create battalions according to sect . Others have suggested a draft but for national service , other than military , thus making haredi part of the whole thing called Israel .No one will crush the Haredi , Netanyahu knows it , as do most other parties. As for Iran ? who can deny that it is an existential threat ?

I deny that Iran is an existential threat.

“Haaretz’s headline is unnecessarily sensational.”

Oh, are you British? I didn’t realize, but the understatement rather gives it away!
