I am proud to have resisted any siren call to intervene in Syria from the get go.

Wait, Destro what is your opinion, you call the FSA Saudi thugs and terrorists, yet no one could think Assad is the answer, what do you propose?

Maybe the point is simply that it isn’t our business for the U.S. to propose anything? What do we stand to gain by spending money that we don’t have, using military resources that we can no longer afford to replace, and spending the lives of our soldiers? Our military is still trying to recover from a decade of too frequent deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, or hadn’t you noticed the toll that has had on them?

Helping to remove Assad from power gains us nothing, it merely helps to install another middle-eastern government controlled by Muslim Brotherhood and other (worse) Islamic theocratic elements. Then what? Will we have actually helped to improve the lives of the Syrian people at all or will we have made them worse? (Or do you propose we stay there in force for a decade and try to do “nation building” yet again?)

At the very beginning of this civil war the majority of the Syrian people still supported Assad. That most likely isn’t true anymore after all the civilian casualties and war damage, who knows, it isn’t as though anyone is taking public opinion polls over there now. This war was started by a minority of activists that began demonstrating for “freedom” caught up in the fervor of the “Arab Spring” and Islamists who saw in it a chance to take power. No matter who wins this mess now true democratic freedom is pretty much the one thing I can guarantee you that they wont be receiving.

What about following the advice of medicine’s Hippocrates and “first, do no harm”.

Clearly, the State Dept’s attempt to “remedy” the Assad situation and the “Saddam” situation (amongst many such cases) has made things worse not better.
