I would prefer to amend rather than repeal SYG. That said, these threats are insane and would make criminal matters out of the business of legislating. How could anyone fail to see the threat of a legislature unable to act because its members fears imprisonment if they pass the wrong law? Except, of course if the person who failed to see did so out of fanaticism and butthurt.

Most likely, this goes nowhere. Most states have provisions shielding legislators from being taken into criminal or civil court for actions in their official capacity, and such laws would shut down this freakshow quickly. But actually prosecuting someone isn’t really the goal: The goal, as ever, is to maintain the most radical wingnuts* in a froth of rage, fear, and self-pity. It’ all I can do not to resort to a Godwin’s Law violation to describe such behavior.

*: “Most Radical Wingnuts” was used here because going after legislators criminally like this is something the NRA opposes firmly, knowing it could be used to prevent pro-gun laws as well, in addition to making the government non-functional. But groups like the Gun Owners of America (GOA) don’t care as long as they can vent their rage.

This is why mental health checks are so vital for sensible gun regulations. Jack Kimball has clearly demonstrated delusional, paranoid thinking that are potential precursors to gun violence and should preclude him from gun ownership.

At first I read that as “This is why mental health checks are so vital for sensible gun regulators.”

This is just another smokescreen by the NRA. Everybody should be able to own guns, and I mean everybody, according to the NRA.

House passes bill allowing gun rights to mentally ill who are rehabilitated

Many Mentally Ill Can Buy Guns

Louisiana Judge Rules That Violent Felons Have Gun Rights Too

I don’t regard mental illness as belonging in the same category as commission of a felony. Someone who was mentally ill but is later certified as having recovered more than enough to not pose a danger to others should be able to buy a gun if he or she wants to.
