I just got back from Taipei a couple weeks ago.

China is still claiming it is an animal disease with rare cross over to Humans. But 3 hospital staff that worked with this patient are showing symptoms?

We have to wait and see about the staff. Everyone there is super sensitive about getting sick, and if my in-laws are any indication, Taiwanese tend to be Hypochondriacs. And currently there is another flu like virus making the rounds in Taiwan that has everyone freaked out. Everyone is using hand sanitizer and constantly looking for soap in the bathrooms (hand sanitizer only kills 99.9%, soap will wash it all off more effectively). And I must say the bathrooms are generally MUCH better equipped than they were back when I lived there. All the airports have a health station that uses an infrared sensor to take everyone’s temperature before they let you through.

I’m crossing my fingers the 3 staff have something else. This could get really bad really quick if it’s bird flu. And normally I’d just blow it off as Taiwanese being excessively sensitive to any little thing. But this could be really serious if I’m wrong.

This is no comfort to me as my husband will be going to China in June.

re: #2 Sionainn

Where is he going?

If he’s there on corporate business and can avoid any of the local “Famous” (meaning local dive/popular because it’s cheap) places he should be fine.

So far it does look like the 3 staff with symptoms are unrelated to the bird flu.

If he has never been there, then I recommend he take toil seat covers (seriously, my last trip was the FIRST time I had EVER seen them in Taiwan, surely they don’t have them anywhere at all in China).

Stay in the upscale western hotels. There are certain standards that are kept everywhere. McDonalds is the only fast food that keeps these standards. Chinese love their fried chicken, and KFC is there. Do NOT eat there, they are localized, food and sanitary wise both. McDonalds is localizing the food a bit these days, but sanitation is still the same as the US. So I might never eat there here, I will occasionally eat there when I’m over there.

Be a hypochondriac when going to the bathroom. You’ll be lucky to find soap in a bathroom. Maybe China has changed in the same ways Taiwan has, but I wouldn’t count on it.
