This doesn’t surprise me, not really. When I was stationed outside of Meridian, MS, back in the early 1980’s, there was a mayoral election held in town between the incumbent and an avowed Klansman. The Klansman lost by a 6 to 1 margin.

I think an added point here is the obvious poverty. By choice or not I do not know. The living off the land lifestyle or just poor and pissed about it?

I think that a lot of the appeal that the KKK or other Nazi-style organizations is that it helps nourish a fantasy that in spite of what “losers” these guys have been their whole lives, they are “an important part of a sacred movement”, and have heroism in their future. These losers hunger for a sense of superiority and accomplishment, but because they are unaccomplished they are forced to derive their sense of superiority from their race alone. It’s really pathetic. The overlap with the gun fetishists is hardly surprising——-so much overcompensating, so little time.
