What is equally ridiculous about his comment is the fact that for their time Spartan women had a lot of power when compared to women in the other Greek city states. It wasn’t perfect by any means but it was better than the treatment of women in Athens. For example Spartan women were considered citizens and thus could own land and businesses, and compete in sports. the first female Olympic victor was Spartan.

Never mind that within the fundamentalist Christian community (which he no doubt is part of), homosexuals are deviants worthy of being put to death, and women are nothing more than property to males.

Advocates the Spartan culture? It always seems like conservatives can’t possibly be as stupid as they present themselves as. How do they find their way out of bed in the morning?

The Spartans didn’t practice homosexuality by choice. They weren’t allowed out of the barracks until they were 35, though they were allowed to marry before then. In order to have sex with one’s wife, you had to basically commit AWOL. So you had an enormous number of men in their horniest years looking for any hole that could be filled. It probably didn’t help that Greek philosophy viewed men as having ordered minds, while women were chaotic, so that having sex with a man or boy was considering the meeting of equals, whereas women were not.
