I’ve been seeing CashCall commercials on TV here in GA recently, but I had no idea that the company’s business practices are so predatory. Wow, 89%-355% interest rates on personal loans is exorbitant. I’ve always been highly skeptical of rent-to-own outfits, and offers for reverse mortgages and of payday loans because I made it my business to investigate them when they first popped up. I recall being at my former minister’s house years ago when he and his wife were renting a 26” TV from Rent-to-Own. One of them had left the rental agreement on a coffee table. I just about puked when I read that they’d end up paying over $500 for a TV you could have walked into just about any store and purchased for @ $200 at that time. Now, these weren’t stupid people, but I guess they had ruined their credit and the only way they could get a new TV was to go to a place like Rent-to-Own. I couldn’t believe the way that company was taking advantage of people. I have come to admire Schneiderman and his willingness to go head-to-head with corporations that abuse their customers. Wish we had someone like him here in GA, but all we have are corporate yes men.

Speaking of things it pays to be wary of, I was looking at HuluPlus the other day, and clicked a link that I thought was associated with Hullu called ReelHD. Supposedly they were offering a month free. The only thing I was nervous about was the “credit-card verification,” reasons for which sounded like bullshit to me. So I did a quick Google of reviews on ReelHD and it turned out that it’s apparently a complete scam. I mean, I immediately went back to the ReelHD sign-up page to make sure that there was absolutely nothing I’d started to type in that might come back to bite me, but it shows how easy it is to get sucked into stuff like that.

I guess they should not have signed the IOU.
