Some people interpret that statistic as saying that we are a nation of makers and takers, with the makers paying the taxes that support the takers. But the story is not that simple. When Romney mischaracterized the 47% as people who took no responsibility for their lives I really wished that someone had forced him to answer this question in a public setting:

So, is a person who has started up his own fledgling business that still is in the red (so no income tax) a taker, or a job creator?

Highlighting the difference between FICA and Federal Income Tax is a good idea. The idea that people get something for nothing when it comes to Social Security is simply not true.

Howdy, been busy but lurking from time to time.

I looked at this some time ago from a more general perspective. In the USA (going by memory) roughly 20% of the population own 80% of the nation’s wealth, but pay about 60% of the taxes (Republicans say 1% pay 60%, which may be true if the 20% is dissected further).

This means that 80% of the population own 20% of the wealth but pay 40% of the taxes.

I trust nobody here needs further explanation, although I suggest researching the equivalent numbers in “socialist” advanced countries.
