The headline is somewhat disingenuous, or at least premature. Of course people who really need heath insurance the most will sign up first.

Many younger people will not sign up until the last minute.

Exactly. Most people procrastinate; that is what happened in Massachusetts. There are enough low income young people who will be able to get insurance for next to nothing thanks to subsidies to support the exchanges, if the damn website ever gets fixed and the Administration gets the word out to them.

Wildly premature. Nobody has faced a deadline or paid a penalty. It seems everyone with a different idea than the ACA is using the rough start to justify their plan whether that be free market of single payer. The providers are still scrambling. Impatience is not our friend.

Nobody yet knows if the ACA will work out. I think it will, if with some adjustments. But it needs 5 years to find out.

I know this is the truth! I almost waited too late to enroll in my state’s 2014 healthcare plan for active and retired state employees. The only reason I remembered was because I received a mailing from the state healthcare agency on November 2nd about a special wellness program it’s offering to retirees. The last day of open enrollment was November 8th. I forgot to re-enroll in 2012, and my rates went up. I didn’t like that too much, but it was my fault I missed the open enrollment window.
