Israel Hayom -Domestic violence report slams authorities’ ineptitude
A new report released Tuesday by the Association of Rape Crisis Centers in Israel and Women’s International Zionist’s Organization Israel painted a bleak picture of domestic violence and sex crimes in Israel in 2012-2013. The report said that over 200,000 women and 600,000 children are “trapped in a cycle of domestic violence,” and both organizations warned the actual figures are much higher, as thousands of women and children do not report abuse.
The Knesset’s Committee on the Status of Women and the Knesset’s Committee on Rights of the Child reviewed the report on Wednesday, as part of a special joint session marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
According to the report, 19 women were murdered by their spouses since the beginning of the year, 72 domestic violence complaints are filed with the Israel Police every day, 88 percent of the sexual assaults against women are performed by someone they know, and 60% of the victims are under the age of 18. The date further indicated that 12% of sexual assaults victims in Israel are men.
