Even MacGyver couldn’t do that!

I know it’s better to err on the side of caution, but this is ridiculous.

and if I roll up my lens paper really tight and soak it in glue, I could make a stick and poke somebody’s eye out. I could garrote them with the camera strap. I could sharpen the edges of a lens cap and throw it like a ninja throwing star. I could use the lens itself to focus the sunlight and set the whole world on fire.

Where I work, we did a lot of the screening testing (aptitude testing) for TSA when they first were doing their big hiring push. All I can say is, based on the people that tested, I don’t have a warm and fuzzy feeling about their level of competency. In many cases these were people who’s normal career progressions wouldn’t go far beyond a paper hat and smelling of canola oil at the end of the day.

Stupidity is not new. Back in the early ’70s a member of a group I was flying with had his hand lens (a magnifying glass every bit as big as a nickle) put into baggage because one might be able to start a fire with it.
Bear in mind that at the time you could take matches and cigarette lighters on a plane with no trouble.

The rest of us also got to keep our little magnifiers.

Yeah. If they filled it with gas it’s a Molotov. Put bleach in it and it’s a deadly water pistol. Fill it with anthrax and we’re all dead. I think some of the TSA folks have stood too close to the X-Ray machine for a little too long. I had to throw out two wooden pirate pistol rubber band shooters from Pirates Of The Caribbean in the Orlando Airport 15 years ago. Before the lunacy that goes on now. I could have put a BIG rubber band in there and commandeered that plane.
