I am not an American Citizen. I stand silently during the Pledge and do not put my hand over my heart.

I’ve never had anyone question me over it.

At the risk of sounding unpatriotic, is it possible the Pledge is outdated?

American Legion Post 134, which typically donated $2,600 to the Parks District, responded by saying it “will be withholding funds from the park district until such time that everyone rises for the pledge.” Post 134 believes that sitting during the Pledge is “disrespectful to all veterans that have been willing to sacrifice their lives for this country and it is a great dishonor to all servicemen and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice and died for this country.”

Except that the majority of them never fought nor saw their buddies die in battle to defend the “Under God” part of the pledge that was not added until 1954 under the Eisenhower administration.

The rational was that God (of course/obviously/duh!) supported our country in our struggle against the “godless” communists of the Soviet Bloc in the “Cold war.”

When non-Christian individuals or groups now try to challenge this prima facie violation of the 1st amendment they are rebuffed by those erroneously claiming it to be a long standing tradition dating from the founding fathers of this country.

I find it deeply discouraging that the same people who fought for our freedoms and liberty. Who sacrificed so much for this countries sake during war. Have now chosen to support a specific religious creed and agenda over one of personal rights and conscience. :(

The words “Under God” were not added to the pledge until 1954, and the Supreme Court has ruled that saying the pledge cannot be made compulsory. You are perfectly within your rights to ignore it altogether if you wish, sit or stand, your decision. Although your decision has to be based on how much ostracism by the other students you are willing to deal with.

That is the major reason why “Under God” needs to be struck down by the courts, like it should have been more than 40 years ago. :(

I am an American Citizen and I do the same thing. I’ve never been questioned about it but I’ve received looks of displeasure from some people for it. From following the links on this story the municipality involved has some power struggle issues. I haven’t checked out what B-PAC is yet, several connected news articles mention problems connected to B-PAC members becoming library board members and having problems with those members. The same people who whine that there must be a connection with God and Country are usually the people who think only Christians should be allowed to celebrate Christmas and confuse Jesus with Santa because Constitution. But I read an article about holiday customs a few days ago that mentioned before the Puritans were tossed out of England they wanted Christmas to be banned.

Usually when Mehta or other Atheists raise money for a specific cause and it is refused they contact contributors and ask if they wish their contribution to be refunded as it will be given to another cause.
