GOProud Founder Jimmy LaSalvia Has Left the Republican Party

Today, I joined the ranks of unaffiliated voters. I am every bit as conservative as I’ve always been, but I just can’t bring myself to carry the Republican label any longer. You see, I just don’t agree with the big-government ‘conservatives’ who run the party now.

The other reason I am leaving is the tolerance of bigotry in the GOP. The current leadership lacks the courage to stand up to it - I’m not sure they ever will.

I have worked hard to help to create an atmosphere on the right where conservatives can openly support gay Americans and even support same-sex marriage. In that effort, we have won, but there is more work to do to root out the anti-gay and other forms of bigotry in the party.

So I changed my voter registration today - “No Party.”

I think he is saying America as a whole has become more accepting of LGBT people and same sex marriage, its just that the Republican party has had nothing to do with it.

I read recently that the breakdown by party re: approval of same sex marriage was 59% Democrat, 58% Independent, and 31% Republican.

If I were Mr. DeSalvia, I wouldn’t go patting myself on the back just yet.

I would not be at all surprised if GOP support for gay marriage has flatlined or even gone down since Obama took office.

And in good news from another red state, a US district judge has declared Oklahoma’s ban on ssm unconstitutional. There won’t be a rush to county clerk’s office’s this time, however, because he stayed his ruling pending appeal.

Guy was still delusional in the first place. Hello, Mr. LaSlavia, the GOP has been hostile to gays for years now. I’m glad to see the country’s progress too but we’re making progress on LGBT issues despite your former party’s bigotry.

Since a majority of Republicans are wanting to criminalize homosexuality, reinstate Jim Crow-era miscegenation statutes and repeal just about every women’s rights law that has been made during the past century, I would contend that the core constituency of the Republican Party has sprinted in the opposite direction than what he is purporting here.
