I don’t agree with the premise of this piece at all. Marissa Alexander wasn’t victimized by racism; She was the victim of the confluence of a law that called the firing of a warning shot in the way she did “aggravated assault” and another law that mandated a 20-year prison sentence for an aggravated assault in which a gun was fired. The latter was passed by a bipartisan super-majority to solve a real societal problem, but ended up catching her in its reach. That law is now being revised to keep that from happening again. Such amending is not the act of a legislature proceeding with malice aforethought.

Why do you think the Prosecutor chose to take her case to trial?

Look at the big picture —who else has she prosecuted and why?

Angela Corey saw Marissa Alexander as little more than a notch in her (Corey’s) belt. She wanted a ‘guilty’ verdict or plea to enhance her own win-loss record. Corey might also have been trying to prove she could win against a decent lawyer, as Ms. Alexander did have a private lawyer of some real ability.

Marissa Alexander’s humanity didn’t and doesn’t mean anything to Angela Corey. That doesn’t necessarily make Corey a racist, but it does make her an asshole.

I am at a loss for words tonite on this. I see racism and sexism. I see a Prosecutor using the status quo to advance her career - not someone who is interested in Justice.

Crosspost from the main thread:

Someone can have a lack of concern for someone else’s humanity (making them an asshole) without having any racial animus towards that other person.

Maybe this is an intersectionality issue —too many facets to be neatly separated from each other.

Well, let’s look at that. If everyone concerned had purple skin and were the same gender, Trayvon, Zimmerman, Dunn, Alexander—do you really think she would have prosecuted as she did?

I just don’t see it.

How does it happen that under one prosecutor, two white men kill black kids and go free and a black woman doesn’t kill anyone and may go to prison for 60 years.

The big picture does matter, regardless of the intricacies of the details of the law code.

The man who shot Dunn is also going to prison, GGT. He got convicted of multiple counts of attempted murder, and he is going to be spending over a decade as a guest of the state.

DF, you are right, I did not word that correctly.

Michael Dunn, although convicted, has not been sentenced.

He was not convicted of murder. Yet a man died. He is expected to be retried on that count.

So, two white men kill two young black men and the justice system creates a holy mess — a media bruhaha ensues. One goes free and the other gets convicted of a attempted murder, but not murder of the young man that was killed. The victims in both cases are black, the killers are white.

Marissa Alexander kills no one and without public intervention, she would not be facing a retrial. Marissa is a black woman.

I see racism.
