In this country you have the right to hate and to speak freely about it. You don’t have the right to act on your hate to infringe the rights or lives of others however. That’s a clear demarcation, and so I’m right with Alan on this. It is bone-headed and counter productive.

The miscreants who propagate hate speech already think that we live in a tyranny and this would change their imaginary victimization into real victimization by infringing their right to speak freely. Let’s be sane and not do that. It’s better to know exactly who the haters are so we can marginalize them and make them pay consequences in the form of ridicule, boycott, and counter speech.

Democrats Ed Markey of Massachusetts and Hakeem Jeffreys want to clamp down on what can be said on radio under the rubric of “hate speech,” and it’s a terrible idea. Government should stay as far away from broadcast content as possible. And who will define “hate speech.” Hate speech can be anything you disagree with. It can be speech directed at a person who is offended. There is no asterisk in the Constitution that says *except for hate speech.”

With bills in the House and Senate, the lawmakers would direct the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) to “analyze” media outlets — including radio — to determine if they’re working to “advocate and encourage” hate crimes.

Oh, and how are they going to “analyze” the? Using what metric?
