Monett Times: Marionville Mayor Bows to Pressure to Resign
When newly elected Marionville Mayor Bob Clevenger stood in public support of “some of the views” espoused by alleged Overland Park, Kansas, shooter Frazier Miller Cross, he may have thought he was the leader of a like-minded community.
Not so much, as it turns out.
MARIONVILLE — After a stormy hour and a quarter, with commentary from a wide range of Marionville residents, new Marionville Mayor Bob Clevenger declared he would resign on Tuesday morning.
“Instead of dragging this town through any more of this mess, I will turn in my resignation at 8 a.m. in the morning,” Clevenger said.
Clevenger made statements in the media supporting views of well-known local white supremacist Frazier Miller Cross, following Cross’s arrest for the murder of three people in Overland Park, Kan., on April 13. Clevenger also admitted to writing a letter to the editor to the Aurora Advertiser about 10 years ago in support of Cross’s views.
Clevenger announced his resignation after city council voted in favor of a resolution to impeach him.
KSDK Channel 5 in St. Louis also noted:
Clevenger told the News-Leader in an article published Friday that he believes that Jews have played a role in hurting the American economy.
“The futures market, the federal reserve, the Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health — every time I see that on the news, there are Jewish names and they run things,” Clevenger told the News-Leader.
Clevenger’s statements have prompted the resignation of Alderwoman Jessica Wilson and the city’s attorney, Paul Link.
Link resigned Friday, effective April 30, according to the city clerk’s office. The Lawrence County city of about 2,225 is about 25 miles southwest of Springfield.
