“States Rights” morphs from people being allowed to own other people to big corporations being allowed to own municipalities.

Fuck the South. A billion times over.

As I’ve said time and again, I’ve never, ever heard the phrase “states rights” invoked for any cause that didn’t consist of screwing someone over just because states somehow oughta be allowed to.

Of course not. Who is going to complain about California and other states having the right to pass pollution/hazmat laws way stricter than the EPA has? Stricter gun laws? That’s “states rights” too.

Don’t twist my words. I didn’t say states couldn’t do good. I said that the phrase “states rights” has never been invoked to do anything but harm. Those words have long ago been poisoned by the neo-confederate crowd. Who the hell in their right mind wants to be associated with that?

People with good ideas argue on the merits of those ideas. They don’t say “the state has the right to do this just because.” Only complete idiots, or a-holes who wish to impose their will upon others, (usually one and the same) make such an argument.

“States Rights” in the context of this article means the state has the right to screw over its citizens for the right of the politicians to rake in huge bribes campaign contributions in exchange for eliminating competition.

An energy company or major emitter that fought in court to keep California from going further would disagree. This is what happens when descriptive phrases are distorted into pejoratives. Oversimplification to mislead about the concept to point out a particular instance of a bad idea.

This reminds me of the same thing happening with some discussions about “corporations are people” . In terms of campaign money the law has made a terrible mistake. But who would take away 1st amendment protections from media companies and news corporations?

Day to day issues come and go. Long term the more important context of where states may tread legally differently from the Federal government needs these phrases intact.
