PM Netanyahu is going to go postal. Fervent prayers for the captured soldier.

A kidnapping during a truce. Hmm. Yeah that really makes me more sympathetic.

Sympathetic towards Hamas, of course not—I doubt you’ll find many here who had much sympathy for them even before the kidnapping—but what Hamas does shouldn’t have any effect on one’s sympathy for innocent civilians.

I’m sure you’re not implying we should conflate the two, I’m just saying…

I should have been more clear. Brevity was not my friend this morning. :-)

And while I’m at it not just the militant wing of Hamas but the political/policy leadership in as much as they might hopefully be different people.

That’s interesting. You can pretty well tell where someone stands on this issue by whether or not they use kidnapped or captured in their headline.

hamas spokesman on CNN just said no soldier was kidnapped and the whole thing was made up by Israel.

Yeah like they tell the truth. Remember the fake video of them capturing (or kidnapping, as if it matters) an Israeli soldier that they put out there a couple of weeks ago?

That’s odd. I was just thinking about posting on that very topic. To me, when there’s a war, and a combatant is grabbed and dragged away to be held, that’s not a kidnapping. It’s a capture. The person taken is not a kidnap victim, but a POW. Those taking him are not common criminals, but soldiers for the other side who have had the good fortune to bag a prize.

When there’s a ceasefire, I don’t think that means the war is over. The person is still a POW, and the guys who took him are soldiers who broke a cease fire.

If they acted against orders, then HAMAS can disavow their actions by returning the POW and asking that the cease fire be reinstated as previously agreed. Of course, they cannot restore the two IDF soldiers killed in the same incident to life, but it would be a symbolic gesture and those are important.

And by the way, you can’t really tell from this specific opinion of mine “whose side I’m on”. I want peace in the area. I don’t see how that’s possible given Hamas’ determination to rain rockets on Israel, so I would like to see Hamas’ will bent. Their current strategy brings only sorrow all around.
