The reason you see so many of them on roadsides is because they have a defensive strategy like this…
1. Hunker down with everything tucked under the shell
2. If necessary, spring straight up in the air, that surprises the predator…. then run for den or place to dig.

Works pretty well, except for when they spring upward into the underside of the car.

Started seeing them here in TN a few years back. They are very destructive, and are also the only animal that can carry leprosy.

And some of them had spiked tails, sort of like a mace at the end of it.
