I really, really, really hate the way high frame rate video looks (assuming we’re talking about the same thing). I can’t begin to understand how people can enjoy watching movies that look like 1980s TV soap operas shot on videotape. I have some friends that just adore the ‘motion interpolation’ feature of their TV, which simulates the effect in movies shot at the standard 24fps. As far as I’m concerned, it doesn’t do anything to make the visuals look “real”, it just makes everything look cheap and shoddy.

It makes shows shot at slower fps look bad. It doesn’t make things shot at faster fps look bad. Any gamer can attest that faster fps looks better. Have you tried watching a live sports event on HD? It doesn’t look like crap at all.

Motion interpolation sucks. I won’t deny that. But the solution isn’t to hold back technology. Its to demand, as a consumer, a way to slow the screen’s fps for older shows. Or just get an older tv. Or maybe they’ll figure out a better way to improve MI so it doesn’t look crappy.

My point is that faster fps isn’t being pushed by the industry for no good reason. It really is better. Its just suffering issues with backwards compatibility.

Problem is, I think we are still waiting for a movie in high FPS that doesn’t look crappy. But that’s not even the real problem - the real problem is that people in the industry are claiming it’s better already when it’s obviously not, in fact it’s much much worse looking than the normal movie fps formats.

We have a saying here in Scotland - “Dinnae pish in my chips and tell me it’s balsamic vinegar”

It’s early days. When they light and stage for high frame rates it will look right. Early color was off, early sound was not great at all. Development is not pretty .

60fps is one thing, but “motion interpolation” sucks. The computer inside a TV cannot gauge velocity the same way the eye can. It’s all very blah.
