CHP Agrees to Settle, Officer Getting Off Too Easy?

He resigns. No mention of charges.

While I applaud the settlement with the victim, the now ex police officer should do some jail time. It’s becoming more and more clear we are over-protecting officers guilty of excess force. Even in a diverse and progressive state like California.

A California Highway Patrol officer caught on video repeatedly punching a woman on the 10 Freeway earlier this year has agreed to resign, the agency said late Wednesday.

Last month, the CHP announced Andrew had been stripped of his duties and could face “potentially serious charges.”

I’ll believe it when I see it. Most likely there’ll be an quiet press release on a Friday afternoon stating they’ve decided not to further pursue the case.

That’s what they said last month and not a peep today. Not even a repeat of possible charges up the road. Presser? I doubt it. Two years from now a file cabinet will click shut and some old pdf’s will be archived. By then our attention will be on some future incident.

We need a larger debate about use of force. Why one young strong officer can’t control an untrained out of shape woman short of blows to the head after she is down flat on the ground. I realize thay can’t all be judo experts but my word this was an anger/rage driven fiasco.

Here’s an shooting incident I just read about:

“Why did you shoot me?”

Cop tells him to get his license, guy reaches into vehicle for his license, cop shoots him. Thank goodness for the dash cam video otherwise who’d believe the black man? At least in this case the cop was arrested and charged but I have zero confidence he’ll be convicted. The big question to me is - how are these cops being trained? In this case the man did exactly what the cop told him to do and he got shot anyway. If the cop didn’t want him to reach back into the vehicle (where lots of people would have their id) he should have asked where it was before telling him to get it.
