Thirteen Clinics Can Reopen After HB 2 Supreme Court Ruling
On Wednesday morning, thirteen abortion clinics across Texas could reopen after a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court to put parts of the state’s abortion law on hold. House Bill 2 would have shut down all but eight abortion clinics in the state, leaving the area south or west of San Antonio without access.
The Supreme Court voted 6-3 to suspend a ruling by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals letting Texas enforce one of the toughest parts of HB 2. That’s the requirement clinics spend millions of dollars in upgrades to meet the same requirements as hospital-style surgery centers. The Supreme Court’s ruling also blocks the requirement of doctors having admitting privileges at nearby hospitals, but only in McAllen and El Paso.
