Wow. Just wow. Those are awesome shots. And the translucence of the wings is amazing as well.

Thanks!
Right, and when I first started today I was not appreciating the advantage of the back lighting. Silly me.

*sitting at desk calculating how much she’d have to save every month for how long to afford a 7D Mark II*

Nope, still too expensive…

Heh, ohhhh the envy.

re: #8 CuriousLurker

You know what the worst part is? Before my aneurysm caused me to stop smoking, I spent $300+ per month on cigarettes, which means about six months worth of smokes would’ve paid for one.

If I calculated all the years that I smoked (38)—even adjusting for the changes in price—shit, I probably could’ve bought a couple of Hasselblads and had change to spare. What a stupid, expensive habit that was… *whimper*

Thanks—{{{RWC}}}—it just kinda makes me want to kick myself in the ass for wasting so much money on what was essentially poison, y’know?

Edit: Okay, I’m gonna stop it now ‘cause this Page is supposed to be about you and your new Precious, not me & my regrets. Sheesh, what a Debbie Downer!

Fantastic shots RWC, the minimal noise at high ISO is great, I bet you can’t wait to do some astrophotography & night cityscapes.

Thanks much. Actually I can’t wait to get to my furnaces. This so opens up the depth of field, for the first time I’ll get all the fire in focus. Sneak peek-watch for “Mr Silverman”. The man in the silver suit who lives for the heat and the metal. Upcoming marketing campaign from my day gig hinges on the Silverman character as a mascot working the furnace.

i love my job. And yes night at Mt Wilson or Baldy is about to get a lot more fun.

Really nice shots of the hummingbird!

Maybe Nikon will get off its rear end now and finally replace the D300s, which used to be a competitor to the 7D Mark I.

I just got a Canon 70D (the next camera down from the 7D) mainly for astrophotography, but I haven’t had time or lenses to put it through its paces yet. First impressions are that it’s a really nice instrument, much nicer than the Rebel line. It won’t match the frames per second of the new 7D (only 7 rather than 10!), but its ISO capability is almost as high and it costs far less. Unless you’re a pro or seriously into action photography, it’s probably the sweet spot for price vs. capability for crop sensor DSLRs on the Canon side. The Nikon equivalent would be the D7100.

BTW, the 7D Mark II costs about 2.5 times the Rebel T5i ($700) and about 3.5 times the Rebel T3i ($500) if you get the body only.

I hope to do some Milky Way time lapse shots when I’m out under a truly dark sky in a couple of months or so.

What just amazes me is the creeping feature itis of Canon. The 70D has built in Wifi, but not GPS, and is using the DIGIC 5, vs Digic 6. The 7d Mark II has GPS, but no built in wifi. It’s like they are purposefully releasing crippled cameras so that people have a reason to upgrade.

All cameras need GPS, Wifi, & Remote control apps via wifi and bluetooth built in. All of them need flip out touch screens. All Canon cameras should use the latest processor. It’s terribly frustrating when you are looking to upgrade.

Plus Canon doesn’t offer an internal intervalometer for most cameras including the 70D and down, while offering a crippled intervalometer for the 7D Mk. II. This allows them to sell the external one for $130, though I opted for a third party one for my future time-lapse night sky work.

Canon’s maneuver is even more egregious since an internal intervalometer is just a bit of software- no extra hardware needed. Nikon offers one on all current models.

Meanwhile, Nikon offers a flip-out screen on only one camera, and a tilting screen on one other, while Canon is far more generous with this feature. The two lowest Nikon models won’t meter with manual focus lenses, yet this is another software-only feature. All that’s required is a menu page where you enter the lens focal length and maximum aperture. Worse, the otherwise excellent prosumer D7100, and the D7000 before it, are partially crippled for action shooting by too small of a buffer if you’re shooting RAW. At least the 70D has a much better buffer.

I just did another review more detailed on the camera and the session at my blog. Ballard Light Capture
