Sorry, this picture is anecdotal, cherry picked, and doesn’t prove a thing, instead it makes me distrust the person using it to prove their argument.

Brushton New York wiki page:

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 479 people, 213 households, and 119 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,727.2 people per square mile (660.5/km²). There were 250 housing units at an average density of 901.4 per square mile (344.7/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.33% White, 0.42% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.42% Asian, and 0.63% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.25% of the population. This works out to be 471 Whites, two African Americans, one Native American, two Asians, and six Hispanics or Latinos.

This is basically a rural poor area where nearly 20 percent of the population is unemployed, and using this picture to try to demonstrate something is almost as bad as using one from an urban ghetto to try to prove the opposite.

The important thing to realize here is that if you fall into the tit for tat trap of pitting urban poor vs. rural poor then you are playing the GOP’s (and Lee Atwater’s) game with their ground rules.

Today’s History:

The Original Welfare Queen, Linda Taylor, was a true grifter. She scammed everyone and Ronald Reagan used her as his poster child to prove many conservative myths regarding entitlements.

re: #1 Thanos
I read the piece as saying “Conservatives have successfully created the myth that it is blacks that abuse the system. Here’s an example of whites accused of abusing SNAP. Therefore, the myth has been destroyed”. I’m skeptical but that seems to be his opinion.
I don’t think it’s fair to say the author is pitting the urban poor against the rural poor. Nowhere in the piece does he say that the rural poor are undeserving of help, abuse the system more than anyone else or make any other judgement about them. He is pushing back against the image of the lazy, black welfare recipient using a factual news story showing non-black people accused of defrauding SNAP.
If he stated that black people never commit fraud or that only rural whites do so then I would agree with you. In fact, nowhere in the piece does he claim that any group commits welfare or SNAP fraud more than any other group.

re: #4 Lumberhead

I see it as just another click bait headline to retell this tale of how Lee Atwater did this, which is absolutely true and horrible, but so embedded in progressive catechism that it actually aids the enemy cause. Lee’s still highly successful because the more you say “Welfare Queen” the more you propagate his message whether you think you are debunking it or not. The people who think they exist don’t care that there are more white than black ones, they care that welfare moochers might exist somewhere no matter how exception to the rule that they are.

Thing is, taking the high road for 30 years has done nothing to dispel the myth.

Sorry but I don’t agree - I’ve seen about sixty zillion variations on this same article over the years and it’s not doing a thing but propagating us vs them rural poor vs urban poor red state blue state infighting. Even when it fails to do that it uses the highly effective game theory lever of “someone’s getting something I’m not” UNFAIR! - that our social evolution has left us all with.
