Plymouth Township Police Chief on State Board to Fight Human Trafficking
Tiderington said human trafficking is “a new catchphrase” to describe a problem that’s long existed.
While trading in human beings often involves forced prostitution, he said, it can also involve domestic slavery, forced labor and sweatshop operations where workers are paid far less than the minimum wage.
Victims are often immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally, he said. In some cases, he said, they agree to a term of servitude in exchange for being smuggled into the country.
“This was a very prevalent problem down there,” Tiderington said of Fort Lauderdale.
