This infuriates me.

These scum are the same ilk that insist the Clinton Foundation is a slush fund when 80 % of its donations goes to action that literally save and improve lives.

Futher this hurts all good charities because people are suspicious that their donations aren’t going to a good cause.

Operation Wounded Warrior comes to mind.

The practice of professional fundraising is not going away, the Supreme Court has upheld it as constitutional and it is regulated in all 50 states.

We can do something about this - by choosing to donate to only those charities that deliver on their charitable goals.

This is absolutely the bottom line. The charitable consumer is charged with doing several minutes of research before donating. However, if someone is calling you on the telephone asking for money, you can be nearly certain that no more than 15 cents (more typically 10 cents) of any dollar you give is going toward charitable purposes. If everyone would simply stop responding to these solicitations, they would go away.

Unfortunately, older Americans (quickly becoming the majority of people who are still reachable via land line phones) are frequently the target of professional fundraising. Everyone needs to discuss this situation with the senior citizens in their lives.

Would I be an asshole for saying I hope they get cancer?

It’s just too easy.

With a relatively small investment I could start my own charity and begin fundraising today. There’s no product or service to deliver, I just have to convince people to give me money on the basis that the money will be (mostly) donated to a worthy cause.

And on top of that, I get to be tax free too! What’s not to like?

I can see why scammers and fraudsters are drawn to these schemes and I support a tightening of the rules to make it harder for them to take the money and run without repercussion.

I really have to disagree. The outlay to establish a non-profit would be fairly small, but that is where the easy and cheap part ends. There is nothing “relatively small” about the investments required for phone rooms, people to handle the phones, legal fees required to register and comply with laws in different states, and, most importantly, the autodialing technology such operations depend upon.

Fundraising is DIFFICULT. If it weren’t, there wouldn’t be a professional fundraising industry. You and your family/friends could attempt to handle all of the soliciting for donations on your own, but you would be looking at hundreds or thousands of dollars…not the millions professional fundraisers generate.

This is a good argument to bring up whenever you hear “Just eliminate government aid and just use charities.” It’s too bad because I imagine many of these charities truly do start out with the best of intentions but then shit like this happens.

Death by Gonorrhea of the throat is the only suitable punishment for these people.
