Can’t lose your base of base ignorance and bigotry. Where would they be without hatred and bigotry?

I’m sure heterosexual couples will be thrilled to hear they can’t get married. Does the government of Mississippi seriously imagine that people all over the country will rise up and pass an amendment banning same sex marriage because straights in Mississippi have to leave the state to get married? Really????

This sounds exactly the same as when states shut down schools to prevent integration.

Without a license, the government would not be required to recognize any couple for purposes of taxes or representation. Who do they think they are actually going to hurt?

I still don’t get how in the hell they think this infringes on their religious liberty. No one is telling me I have to marry someone of the same sex, nor is anyone telling me I have to change my religious beliefs or practices. If I don’t agree with marriage equality, then I won’t apply for a job or attempt to get elected/appointed to a position that will require me to issue marriage licenses or perform marriages of same-sex couples.

It’s detestable how the same people who whine about “religious freedom” want to dictate—based on their religious beliefs—whether or not others’ birth control can be covered through their employer provided insurance, etc.

This is hardly a surprise. How many times over the last 10 years have we heard people say “the government should get out of the marriage business entirely.” Here is a logical extension of that notion.

According to their belief system, Hatred and Bigotry is what enables their magic powers.

I really can’t imagine any way that would survive a single court challenge.

Is there any appeals court in the country that’s conservative/wingnutty enough to give it a thumbs-up?

We’re taking our bat and ball and we’re going home!

As I mentioned before, mentally and emotionally these people are three.

I guess they think if they are required to give it to everyone it shouldn’t be given to anyone.

“Oklahoma is investigating a similar change. A bill there would allow notaries and religious leaders to sign marriage documents and strip the power from judges and clerks.”

Presumably this means the state will also check potential notaries and religious leaders for theological correctness. Because otherwise it would be meaningless.

Not sure how this is supposed to work. I’m not married, but I assume marriage certificates mean something. Or is the idea to end the practice of civil marriage and turn over the licensing of marriage to pastors/priests/reverends, etc? If so, that sounds like some seriously messed up First Amendment, Separation of Church and State stuff if the church marriage is then supposed to be given state legitimacy.

re: #11 Fourth Football of the Apocalypse

That certainly sounds right. Like I said upthread, we’ve been hearing this “take the ball and go home” “solution” to the debate for years. If the state no longer supervises marriage, who does that leave? You’ve hit the nail, I think.
