Can someone explain to me what good selling insurance across state lines would be? Insurance currently sold in Virginia is designed for the residents of Virginia, do people really think they’re going to find a bunch of doctors in their network three states away or is it just disingenuous bullshit?
It’s a race to the bottom. The key is the issuing state gets to decide the parameters, completely superseding the home states’ insurance boards. The idea has completely failed in small trials (Maine, Georgia, & Wyoming), since it’s a chicken-and-egg situation: it’s not affordable for a company to cross state lines unless they have a large enough subscriber pool to negotiate provider discounts. If allowed on a national level, however, it would do to health insurance what Delaware does for banking: New York’s statewide insurance requirements would be meaningless for a policy written in Alabama. Of course, this means a policyholder living in Albany and having a complaint would have to take it to Montgomery. But to the insurers, that’s not a bug…that’s a feature.
So the plan is to take away insurance from people who now have it, perhaps for the first time in their lives, and tell them they can get insurance by…what exactly?
