“Just give it time,” Brownback and his buddies said, and “our economy will explode with new jobs.” Yeah, riight. These guys have been living an economic fantasy for decades, and reality has finally crashed onto their heads. I’m glad this is being reported by some in the media, and I’m hoping that millions of Americans will finally realize that when it comes to economic matters, GOP/TPers are some of the finest snake-oil salesmen on the planet.

Sam Brownback’s brother Jim Brownback accused of terrorizing rural neighbors

Undulating fields of crops and livestock-dotted pastures are the domain of a trigger-happy bully who brags about a political cloak of invincibility keeping him beyond reach of the law in faithfully conservative Linn County.

Adversaries say he has woven a liquor-infused tapestry of fear colored by intimidation, abuse and lies. The saga features stalking, death threats, trespassing, drive-by gunfire, massive explosions, cattle theft, loan defaults, hit-and-run driving and marital strife. Linn County Sheriff’s Department files bulge with complaints about him.

There is trepidation among acquaintances to speak freely, a point accentuated by the number expressing nervousness about reprisal if they were candid. There is genuine fear.

Sam Brownback’s brother Jim Brownback accused of terrorizing rural neighbors

Arthur Conan Doyle once remarked, through Sherlock Holmes, that worse things happen in rural areas because of the isolation and the tribalism of country life. This seems to be the case here.

Not that I’m saying there’s something wrong with the rural lifestyle. I’ve met wonderful people there. But people like Jim Brownback seem to get away with this sort of thing partly because of family prestige and partly because nobody wants to rock the boat.

I could be wrong but I believe it would be very difficult to do something like this in an urban area. Too many police too close, cities are usually large enough to tell the state/province to piss up a rope and even organized crime would do something about this because it’s really bad for business plus they would likely be concerned about the stalker being a danger to their power. Stalkers attract attention and organized criminals prefer anonymity.

Still, a very sad story. I worry for Jim Brownback’s neighbours. I think it’s only a matter of time.
