One of my church leaders showed me the postcards, raising an eyebrow as if to say, “This is brilliant, and we’re stealing the idea.”

This is what cultural exchange is all about!

Seriously—people should be competing to outdo each with good deeds instead of trying to convert or judge others. They’d prolly win a lot more hearts that way.

We once threw this crazy BBQ party. It was the bring your own grill party. Tongue in cheek but what we really did was but extra grills for the Weber. Kosher, veggie, unrestricted. This accommodated our group that includes vegetarians, Muslims and Jews. Oh and a box of washed fresh fruit for general consumption by the very strict as our bbq probably broke a few rules anyway.

I am not a religious man in the slightest but I think stuff is just what we need. We may not be the same religion or in my case not have any religion but we share this world and country. Let’s try to get along even if our beliefs about why the world is the way it is may differ. Good on this congregation. The fundie hate preachers who spend their days hating on Muslims could learn a lot from these people.

Thanks for posting this, for a couple of reasons.

First, because my kids were raised in that town and still live there. Part of the reason for choosing to move there was because I wanted the kids to be raised in a diverse environment. Familiarity is a great vaccine against bigotry; they understood from their own experiences that the bigots were lying.

Second, I’ve also made a group visit (to a different mosque) as described in the article and my experience closely mirrors the authors. I was deeply touched at the gratitude expressed for our desire to learn and discover the truth, especially when seeing the pain bigotry has caused and the toll it has taken.

I encourage other groups to follow this example. Let’s work toward the day when people won’t need to be happy and grateful for being acknowledged and treated as an equal.

re: #6 HappyWarrior

Exactly. Since we’re all stuck here together we might as well try to get along.

Wow, small word, huh? It’s neat to hear that someone here at LGF has lived there and can back up what the article says. You did your kids (and everyone they come in contact with) a great service by seeing to it that they’d be exposed to diversity, so thank you for that.

I encourage other groups to follow this example. Let’s work toward the day when people won’t need to be happy and grateful for being acknowledged and treated as an equal.

From your lips to…. :-)
