The Denver Post Editorial Board is correct on the policy and the overall national politics, but I don’t think those things are what Hillary Clinton focused on when she made her ‘buyback’ comments. Her target audience was pro-gun control liberals and she was further aiming to drive a wedge between such people and Bernie Sanders.

Invoking the compensated confiscation the Australia implemented (because it was not a ‘willing seller’ buyback, it was ‘your gun is now illegal, take some money for it and hand it over, destroy it yourself and get nothing, or go to prison.’) is intended to link Clinton to something Sanders finds unacceptable. This is because Australia banned pump-action shotguns, which are ubiquitous in North America, and which Sanders defends for their value as hunting guns that can also have legitimate home-defense applications as well.

So by talking about the Australian Gun Buyback, Hillary Clinton looks to position herself to the left of Bernie Sanders on the issue of guns in order to appeal to Democratic Primary voters. That not even a Democratic Congress would pass the kind of legislation she is talking about is not something her intended audience cares about: Hillary Clinton is giving them the “Purity Now!” that they desire.

DF, if only you had the same passion and knowledge about something other than guns.

Think about it: your best posts are about inanimate killing machines. Does that really say something positive about you?

Not only isn’t such a buyback in the cards, even raising its specter could easily harden opposition to legitimate gun-control measures (which she also supports). Such talk stokes the fear of gun owners who believe the ultimate goal of campaigns for modest, appropriate regulations is to confiscate firearms.

So Hillary and others who support gun safety laws need to STFU because gun nuts are even crazier than other nuts? Sorry, but there are already plenty of candidates pandering to such extremists. Why the hell should she do the same?

NRA fan boys have a no-compromise mentality; they don’t believe “legitimate gun-control measures” are even a real thing. Worrying about offending these extremists is a waste of time.

re: #1 Dark_Falcon

“purity now”? Gee, what a surprise, DF - you clearly haven’t paid attention to Clinton’s campaign, let alone the recent debate. Yet you know her motivations - you’re a a psychic! Just like every other dishonest republican who pretends to know it all without bothering to actually pay attention.

This piece is lazy. She’s not talking mandatory anything. Anyone who buys into(let alone those who wrote) this article), seems to think that America ought to be run on the fragile emotions of the far right, by the ‘moderate’ republicans who’re too dense to understand the monster they’re creating when they set out to manipulate such a fragile group of people. What a way to analyze policy proposals. Only think about the extremists. Oh and of course, pretend to be psychic - and declare the nefarious intentions of the Dark Lady.
