Thank you. I love it when my efforts encourage others. looking at some cinematographers and how they light scenes encourages me to press on. Switching to the Lee filtration system by the way. I can not afford to buy great filters in several diameters. I own what I own but no more.

Ooh, you added two new ones—one from D_L too, love the inclusion of the foreground!

That Lee filtration system looks interesting. Gonna bookmark that one.

P.S. Did D_L do that with a long lens? Just wondering because it has that compressed look (trying to find out if my eye is learning the difference between long & short lenses).

It’s the kit lens, zoomed in considerably, and a lil fill flash. So right you are just not the 400mm.

Yay me! I’m finally learning to “see” things. I was just looking at the photo b.d. posted in the overnight thread and thinking it would’ve been a good ‘shop if they hadn’t got the depth of field wrong. There’s no way it would drop off that sharply—even with a super shallow the change isn’t that abrupt.

My best guess is they were trying to hide something and not waste too much time, so they just used a soft-edged brush to erase the edge of the counter then applied a heavy Gaussian blur to the background. Note how the edge of the counter simply fades away into nothingness (the beige behind it is the floor of the kitchen in the blurred layer). Also, the cutting board is defying the law of gravity by hanging off the edge of the counter and not falling, despite the pressure the the disembodied hands and knife must be putting on it.
