Hillary Clinton Clinches Democratic Nomination
Striding into history, Hillary Clinton will become the first woman to top the presidential ticket of a major U.S. political party, capturing commitments Monday from the number of delegates needed to become the Democrats’ presumptive nominee.
CBS News’ Major Garrett has confirmed that Clinton has secured enough superdelegates to clinch the nomination.
CBS News estimates that Clinton has the delegate support she needs to secure the Democratic nomination at the convention in July, and she becomes the Democrats’ presumptive nominee. Clinton’s delegate estimates include the support of both elected delegates and superdelegates.
“According to the news, we are on the brink of a historic, historic, unprecedented moment, but we still have work to do, don’t we?” Clinton said when she took the stage at a rally in Long Beach, minutes after CBS News and other news outlets reported their projections. “We have six elections tomorrow, and we’re going to fight hard for every single vote, especially right here in California.”
