265 Dead in Failed Coup, Erdogan Returns to Istanbul; 2,800 Arrested
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey has returned to Istanbul, signaling that the military coup against his government is faltering.
He suggested that the plotters had tried to assassinate him on Friday with a bombing in the Turkish Mediterranean resort town of Marmaris.
At least 265 people have been killed in clashes, including 104 supporters of the coup attempt. The other 161 deaths include civilians and police officers killed in a helicopter attack on the outskirts of Ankara and in explosions at Parliament.
More than 2,800 military personnel across Turkey have been arrested, and an official in the president’s office said the last soldiers backing the coup were holed up in the military headquarters.
