Millions of Workers to Gain Overtime Protection Dec. 1
Watch for the GOP to promptly take this away from the working class next year.
Millions of workers will be eligible for overtime pay Dec. 1, when new federal rules go into effect.
The new Department of Labor regulations, published in May, extend, overtime protection to over four million workers by raising the limit on exempt employees to those making an annual salary of $47,476. Previously, salaried workers making as little $23,660 could be considered exempt from overtime pay, even if they worked more than 40 hours in a week.
Some businesses are preparing for the change by raising salaries of employees above the new threshold or reducing the hours for other workers, according to a New York Federal Reserve Bank survey. The majority of businesses to answer the survey — 70 percent of manufacturers and 60 percent of service firms — said they would make no adjustments because of the new rules.
