97 degrees and no real sun is still quite hot.
There was rain on the minutecast and we were going to be moving around a lot down in the hole, so no gazebo this week. and we didnt have to move the rafters.
Now, I’m warning you, don’t say we didn’t do a lot of work.
It may not ‘look’ like a lot…
These are tampers.
They’re used to pack down sand or dirt when you don’t have a gas powered machine like vinnie did for thegreatleveling.
We already owned the one with the wood handle. It weighs 8#. We needed two and, of course I had to be all macho and by a bigger one; 14# worth.
there’s videos all over the internet showing them in use. here’s one: youtube
and most of them do it wrong. you lift, and let it drop by gravity. no need to pound the ground.
We spent an hour and a half compacting the sand. That’s almost a ton of lifting and let drop, lifting and let drop.
Look at the last 2 emails to see the fill sand before compacting
And here is after:
For 1.5 hrs work, there’s not much to explain.
Next week we begin again: more sand bags, more fill sand, more tamping until we reach the correct height for this first shelf.
