Federal Judge Rules ICE Can No Longer Operate in and Around New York Courthouses
Here’s another good decision against Trump’s use of ICE in courthouses, this is a good ruling that’s been fought back and forth through the lower courts. We will see if Trump will push to go to the Supreme Court with appeal.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents can no longer make civil immigration arrests in and around New York state courthouses, a federal judge ruled Wednesday.
Legal aid attorneys and immigrant rights organizations had called for an end to the practice in recent years.
The immigration raids jeopardized public safety and discouraged victims and witnesses from reporting crimes and participating in the legal process, according to Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. He and New York Attorney General Letitia James filed the lawsuit against ICE and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to end the practice.
