I know that story well. At first it looks like a few things need to be done and then you look at the list. Oy Vey. Those are the joys of living in a house.

Trust me.
You will never have “nothing to do” if you want.
But it’s yours.
Think of it like a Treasure Hunt.
“What’s behind that? Wonder what’s under this. Is that asbestos?” (Older flooring has asbestos and older paint has lead. Be careful.)

My ceiling has asbestos. ‘Popcorn”. Ugh.

I help people with their projects all time.
I can tell you horror stories about problems I’ve found.

The thing that truly pisses me off is the quality of some of the work that folks paid so-called experts to do.

It’s rewarding to learn the work. And you’ll probably have better results as well.

Nice progress.

I have a 91 year old house which I love.
Built so much better than the new stuff.

Just had my attic insulation tested (there are 3 layers but still not much insulation.

Was thrilled to hear there was no asbestos up there. Now I can get more insulation.

That’s not good if you wish to redo it. Abatement is $$$. You could keep it and do what they call “encasement” which seals it from flaking.

Encasement involves covering the asbestos popcorn ceiling so it can’t produce dust. This can be done with new ceiling panels or by spraying the ceiling with a special kind of vinyl paint. Either of these options should be performed by a professional who knows how to safely and effectively encapsulate asbestos.

Test this way.

You can test a popcorn ceiling for the presence of asbestos by carefully scraping a small sample into a plastic bag and having it tested at an EPA-accredited lab. While homeowners are allowed to remove a popcorn ceiling that contains the material, a professional asbestos remediation company should do the job.

You should back-light the TV proper - makes a world of difference.
