Were Republicans Really the Party of Civil Rights in the 1960s?

I remember seeing a very effective article on this, and I believe it was here. It showed that it wasn’t really a R vs D issue, the voting lines broke out very strongly North vs South in terms of it’s passage.

My favorite meme of the right, MLK was a republican. Easily disproven by his own correspondence, but when you push them on it, crickets.

Edit…

I found the breakdown by region vs party. it shows votes For and Against, and then the percentage breakdown

The original House version:
Southern Democrats: 7–87 (7–93%)
Southern Republicans: 0–10 (0–100%)

Northern Democrats: 145–9 (94–6%)
Northern Republicans: 138–24 (85–15%)

The Senate version:

Southern Democrats: 1–20 (5–95%)
Southern Republicans: 0–1 (0–100%)

Northern Democrats: 45–1 (98–2%)
Northern Republicans: 27–5 (84–16%)
