Afghanistan should have been broken up after the Taliban were overthrown. Give the Pushtan region to Pakistan and the Uzbek region to Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and the part that is Shia (small part) to Iran.

That would have been the best alternative than trying to keep a failed state composed of multi-ethnic people all hostile to each other inside artificial borders.
