I’ve yet to see any really good analysis on this front, but the basis for the $2.7t seems to be that the illegal immigrants tend to work in lower skill positions and therefore don’t generate sufficient wages to generate revenues sufficient to offset the greater numbers. Take that deficit on an annual basis - multiply by 10 years, and presto - there’s your figure.

This would be roughly a quarter of a million dollars per person. That… seems like a lot. It’s a factor of five more than the US public debt per person (about $50,000), and we’ve been doing our best to accrue that for at least the last thirty years.

It’s certainly a smelly enough number to demand that someone show their math.
