If that were included, then it would not be a clean increase.

But it might be better to make a counter-proposal instead of just stripping it. We’ve all been worried about the CDC, so how about offering a micro bill funding the CDC plus the budget bill for the Justice Department in exchange for the Treasury limits being dropped. That would fund important priorities and allow the GOP to claim a win while getting rid of the problematic limits.

No. That microbill method’s already been tried, and there’s a reason it was rejected.

Right now the pressure is on both sides. If the things for which the Republican congresscritters will take heat get funded and the other stuff doesn’t, they have no pressure on their side.

The thing is, Dark, that everything the government does is important to someone. WIC, CDC, Customs, Head Start, Courts, and more - despite Reagan’s lie the government is here to help. So just funding the stuff one side wants is defacto surrendering the negotiation to that side.

Actually, the really big thing is that this is an attempt to destroy the constitution. Oh, I’m sure the players don’t think so but it is. It’s the attempt to allow one house of the government to dictate terms to the other house and the presidency - ‘regardless of votes and history play our way or we’ll blow up the government.’ The absolute baseline of the oath they take should deny using the nation as a hostage.

That play needs broken as surely as South Carolina’s attempts at nullification and the farmer’s attempt to remove taxes on whiskey.
