A commenter on my FB page last night left the most succinct summary of Obama’s EO:

IF you have been here 5 years or longer AND have a minor dependent who is citizen AND you submit to (and pay for) a background check AND are not a criminal PLUS pay taxes THEN you can stay WHILE you follow the normal process towards applying for citizenship without fear of deportation.

As far as the EO itself - I think last night, Obama signaled to Wingnut Nation that he can, and will, play hardball too. You guys want to threaten to shut down the government? Fine. I’ll see your meaningless shutdown and raise you an Executive Action on something that really matters.

The president dropped the gloves last night. And all those people who have been accusing him of using ‘Chicago-style politics’ for years might actually get to see some for real now. And I think he’s been waiting for the day that he could do it.
