I just bought a copy of The Handmaid’s Tale for $1. Now I see why I never read it. It came out in 1985. I graduated from college in 1980. I used to read a lot. Somebody told me, ‘College will cure you of that.’ I thought, ‘Never’. Then I took a 1 month course (that equaled a semester) of William Faulkner. Read almost everything he wrote, plus critiques and commentary, and wrote papers, one of which was so good, the jerk never gave it back. And that was in my freshman year…

I was cured of reading. I’m ready to catch that disease again.

When I was in High School I remember the Big 5 that were popular—Heinlein, Vonnegut, Hesse, Tolkien and Brautigan. I read their books over and over then I discovered the set of Great Books of the Western World in the library…
