If information has come to light casting doubt on Al Megrahi’s guilt, then he should be re-tried and perhaps set free. If not, then he should rot in jail for the rest of his life. His sentence should not be altered for any reason without a retrial.

Too late for that!
Megrahi had another appeal pending - and withdraw it, so he could be released.

There are the usual conspiracy rumours (yep - it was the CIA, in case you didn’t know!), but now we will never know.

IMO, one can show mercy after all judicial inquiries have been done and finished, and there is no more doubt.
Not before!
